I started using Ebay a couple of years ago to buy parts for my camera. I've both bought and sold on Ebay and would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone with a couple of caveats.
Always do your research on the item you are buying: check how much it's worth second-hand/new, and what its features are (e.g. if you're buying a 2nd hand camera, find out its specifications). Decide the maximum amount you are willing to pay and don't get drawn into a bidding war. Most of the bids get put in towards the end of the auction period, so use the watchlist function Ebay provides.

And ALWAYS check out the seller. Ask questions if you need to, and read their profile. While there are a few cowboys out there, I've never had a problem with anyone on Ebay.
